David Bowie has been the latest artist to fall victim to the rules of the UK Charts (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-20959202) by offering his new song 'Where Are We Now?' for sale but also free if you pre-order the album. Now the former means sales count for the chart but the latter means they don't as the track is, in effect, free. Because there is no way to distinguish between the sales the track therefore is discounted from the charts.
Clearly someone at the record label should have a better understanding of the rules so it's not going to stop Will.I.Am and Britney reaching number one, currently top of the mid-week chart. Sadly, both songs aren't exactly the greatest tune with Bowie's being a sombre, lacklustre ballad and Will.I.Am's a formulaic, generic dance track that replaces his usual flair with a tedious by-numbers song.
As the movie tagline goes, whoever wins, we lose.
