My Favourite Scenes with Clones

Posted on 01:03 by Unknown
Clones are everywhere it seems: Alice Cooper albums, Star Wars, Twilight fans. But what are the best scenes involving clones?

As Olly Murs releasing 'Army of Two' featuring multiple Murs clones, here is my run down of fun clones appearances...

1. Olly Murs - Army Of Two

More Murs than you can possible handle.

2. Primeval - Series 2 Episode 7 / Series 3 Episodes 1-3

A cracking reveal as the end of series twist, with a concept used to great effect over the following three episodes. (Skip to 45.04)

3. The Matrix Reloaded - Burly Brawl

A fantastic piece of CGI for its time but with a great soundtrack. Still technically impressive now even if it goes a little video gamey later.

4. The Matrix Revolutions - Ending

And the conclusion to the trilogy utilised less of the clones in the actual action but was just as enjoyable.

5. Kylie Minogue - Come Into My World

I mean, who wouldn't want multiple Kylies to come into their world?

Olly Murs is an incredible individual - not only has he invented a machine that will clone himself many, many times he can also climb invisible stairs too, at 2:35 and 3:37.

He's amazing that man. He can even find a car park that's empty.

Kaiser Chiefs - live at 02 Apollo, Manchester

Posted on 08:03 by Unknown

Kaiser Chiefs
Supported by ‘Heavy Ball’ and ‘Night Engine’.
Friday 15thFebruary 2013, O2 Apollo, Manchester

I took a much needed night off this week to go and see one of my favourite bands live in Manchester. Amazingly, considering they are in my top ten favourite bands of all time, this is only the second time I’ve seen them live, after a brilliant performance in Kirkstall Abbey a couple of years ago (where I saw them the night that didn’t include ‘Spector’ sadly, a wrong I’ve since righted).

Getting to the gig was simpler than I’d imagined and, having waited in a considerable queue to get in, entry was surprisingly swift and the venue pretty large and well-kept, and I was able to get a pretty good view from behind the FOH to see the band and the two supports. A can, yes can, of Gaymers, which broke my extended sober-January resolution, cost a wallet-bashing £3.90 but I only had one so no major issues there.

Opening support ‘Heavy Ball’ were a very strong opener and the better of the two. The ska-rock band delivered a selection of great, instantly catchy tunes, alongside a brilliant cover of the classic ‘Smalltown Boy’ and their own similarly-titled but different sounding ‘Smalltown Hero’. Their ska sound was very much welcomed by my ears and though the sound mix meant their between-song banter wasn’t understandable, their music made for it with their vocal harmonies and great crowd-engaging closer ‘Wanted’ ticking all the boxes. I enjoyed it so much I’ve download their EP, available from iTunes, Amazon and other purveyors of digital music.

Second support was ‘Night Engine’, a mis-matchingly dressed band with a distinctly eighties sound. Their opening number ‘Lick Me Up’ was an incredibly catchy opener immediately warming the crowd to them, it’s just a shame the songs that followed it, though fun, merged into one another and lacked the spark displayed in the first. The last couple of songs, though, went someway to re-capture that magic with the repeating ‘baby’ hook of the latter (“Treat Me Like A Baby”) grabbing the crowd. A great start and end to a set but not as fun to hear as the first. Downloaded ‘Treat Me Like A Baby’ though, available on Amazon.

Not long after they left the stage the Kaiser Chiefs came on, flickering lights ufo-like above them signalling their arrival in front of the audience, very much setting a great mood. With that the curtain literally fell and the band were on, bursting into a spirited rendition of ‘Thank You Very Much’. The sound quality of the band was spot-on after being OK for the supports but it was the lighting showcased throughout the gig that really sold the venue for me, capturing the spirit of the gig perfectly, alongside the energy of Ricky Wilson as a great frontman, often jumping up to a special block within the audience to really connect with the fans.

The opening numbers – though containing none of their “big hits” – proved they didn’t need them as the energy was vibrant and the songs delivered perfectly, with new drummer Vijay Mistry slotting in perfectly to the band, even if his appearance in the band was never really introduced to the audience. ‘Kinda Girl You Are’ and ‘Everything Is Average Nowadays’ set the mood and ‘Little Shocks’, a single that was received with mixed reviews, gained a new life live. ‘Like It Too Much’ joined ‘Good Days Bad Days’ as an ‘Off With The Heads’ double-act, in a set that covered the albums well even if the most recent album was sadly unrepresented, with only three of the twenty-three tunes present; even though the big ones were included something extra like ‘Problem Solved’ would have been welcome, but I have very little complaints about the songs served up by the band as it was pretty much the perfect set-list.

Their breakthrough hit ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’ brought the crowd into song, in possibly one of the most singable gigs I’ve been to. ‘Born To Be A Dancer’ was resurrected from their debut album – complete with a few more explicit lyrics than we’re used to – and was brilliant to hear live before ‘Modern Way’ continued the set.

New track ‘Living Underground’ followed and even on first listen felt to be a strong contender for a sequel, and if it wasn’t penned by the original line-up of the team I don’t think there are any immediate worries about life for the band after the departure of chief songwriter (and drummer) Nick Hodgson. Immediately catchy, I see it being a live-favourite for the next tour.

My personal favourite ever Kaiser Chiefs track – ‘Heat Dies Down’ was played next and was very well received, as was a rockier, more electronic, faster version of ‘Love’s Not A Competition (But I’m Winning)’.

As the set neared its conclusion the big hitters started to come out, all well performed live, from ‘Never Miss A Beat’ to ‘Ruby’, before which a second curtain fell to reveal the huge ‘Souvenir’-rock backdrop, then ‘I Predict A Riot’ and finally ‘The Angry Mob’, which boasted an extended second half which was the chance for band, sound, lighting and crowd all to come together and experience a brilliant rendition, with the breakdown middle really adding to the impact.

As is customary on these occasions the band left the stage before returning a few minutes later to give us a three-song encore, including new song ‘Saying Goodbye’, a ballad sung by electric candle-light-out and, though on first listen, sounded great and sounds like a cracking album closer. They followed this with a spirit and thoroughly enjoyable cover of the Stranglers’ classic ‘No More Heroes’ and then the last of their big hits ‘Oh My God’ before the crowds dissipated and I went to retrieve my bag from the cloakroom in the most ill-planned location with the queue obstructing an exit.

Overall, it was another fantastic set from the Kaiser Chiefs, which was both lit fantastically and sounded great and was practically the perfect playlist. The new songs slotted in fine and sound promising and Wilson’s acrobatics and timing with a tambourine throughout the performance was something to behold. The only bugbear I had – which was mirrored by a few people I heard as exited – was that an hour for the main set and twelve or so minutes for the encore, the set was quite short. That said, what we did get was brilliant, with some enjoyable support acts too, and I look forward to seeing them in September again at the new Leeds Arena.

I'm sick of dramas I watch being cancelled

Posted on 13:44 by Unknown
Today was possibly the saddest television news I could have heard in a long time. Drama 'The Hour', which recently finished its second series, has had its promised third series cancelled. This cancellation of the BAFTA-nominated show follows other British cancellations in recent weeks of critical acclaimed dramas such as 'The Fades' and 'Dirk Gently' and, my personal favourite 'Primeval' has been left to fade away without being recommissioned.

Now the BBC article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21425566) says that series two of 'The Hour' only got 1.47m votes which is a small number in the grand scheme of things such as 'The X Factor' and 'The Voice' and the army of other programmes that tread the same water.

But 'The Hour' was a truly enjoyable programme, well made and stylish, but with characters that people care about. And just like 'Heartbeat' and 'Primeval' before it, alongside many, many other examples, it ended on a cliffhanger, one that will never be resolved.

It shouldn't also be forgotten that whereas a lot of these reality shows can never be released on DVD or syndicated around the globe this quality drama can be.

I'm very disappointed in the cancellation and is another example of the lack of support for British-based dramas. I'm tired on getting into a series only for them to be cancelled so soon into their run, especially without an ending being written in. I appreciate money has to be made available for new dramas but this shouldn't be at the expense of chopping and changing what's on our screens.

Warm Bodies [Review]

Posted on 02:29 by Unknown

Warm Bodies is a romzomcom, telling the story of ‘R’ who is a zombie but with an internal monologue who, whilst on a hunt with his crew for humans to eat, stumbles across Julie who, after eating the brains of her dead boyfriend, develops feelings for her and starts becoming more human again, leading a return to humanity for the zombies before a battle between them, the humans and the ‘bonies’, zombie skeletons too far gone to change.

If you’re expecting a Twilight-esque lovey-dovey story from ‘Warm Bodies’ then you’ll be disappointed. Though it is a loose adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, it’s more funny than lovey. The opening ten minutes built around the internal monologue of ‘R’ – a style of presentation that comes back throughout the film – establishes the humour well and has several laugh-out-loud moments. It’s part zombie action film, part teenage romance, part awkward-date movie, all rolled into one and the concept, based on a novel really works. Some of the best bits are spoilt in the trailer but there are lots of funny moments that aren’t, so don’t worry too much about that.

It also pokes fun at its own genre at several points, much needed in a media that’s currently saturated with zombies in the cinema, on television and in video games.

The cast really gel together and the story is rounded off by some well-placed flashbacks and even though I still can’t not think about Pascal Sauvage and his bad French accent every time I see John Malkovich on screen, he adds a star name to the cast. Nicholas Hoult and Rob Corddry were great in the film and nailed the zombie acting, and Teresa Palmer as R’s love interest was equally enjoyable.

Alongside the sweet natured and funny plot, there’s actually a lot of surprisingly well done CGI in the film based around the bonies, even if they do have a similar resemblance to the alien in ‘Signs’. There are several tense action sequences but it’s the humour – sometimes obvious, mostly subtle – and the relationships between the zombies that make the film, in particular between R and “best-friend” M.

There’s a little bit of something for everyone in the film from gory action sequences to spot-on humour, to some romance, and though it may lose a little momentum in its middle-third, was a very enjoyable film with several laugh-out loud moments that cement it as a great film. Definitely a movie I’d like to see again.

Warm Bodies – 8/10

Wreck It Ralph Review

Posted on 02:17 by Unknown

It may have taken three months to land on these shores – what is it about Disney films taking ages to cross the pond ala ‘The Muppets’, it’s no wonder piracy is rife – but my excitement for ‘Wreck It Ralph’ has not faded. Telling the story of Ralph, the baddy in an arcade game called ‘Fix It Felix Jr’ – think classic arcade game ‘Donkey Kong’ – who is tired of the same day-in day-out treatment of being the villain, getting thrown off a building, and living in a dump, whilst the hero gets the medal and the admiration. On the day of the game’s 30thanniversary Ralph decides to change his life and win a medal to fulfil a bet with one of the inhabitants of the game so he can live in the plush penthouse. He finds himself across the arcade, via a train-station like portal for arcade characters, entering a game called ‘Heroes Duty’ where he wins the medal but ends up in another game entitled ‘Sugar Rush’, where he meets one of the characters in there and their adventure together snowballs to the films conclusion, bringing the cast together against two disparate threats.

I was looking forward to this film and had high hopes for it but, unlike last year’s ‘Looper’ or ‘The Avengers Assemble’ which I was equally excited for but ultimately found disappointing, this lived up to my expectations and surpassed them. This is by far the best animated film I’ve seen since the brilliant ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs’ or anything by Aardman and is a joy to watch.

For someone like me, who played classic 8-bit games as a young child, ‘Wreck It Ralph’ is a feast for the eyes, with more cameos of classic gaming characters than you can count – look Sonic! Dig Dug! Pacman! – and an eye for detail that is amazing. The way the characters move in the film captures their respective gaming styles perfectly and all the codes, conventions and tropes of the era are captured in celluloid perfectly.

From the 8-bit games the characters move in jerky fashion, all at right-angles, and in the more modern ones, a spot-on parody of all the modern X-Box shoot-em-ups, realistically done with hilarious phrases and mixed metaphors, with the head of ‘Heroes Duty’ being one of my favourite in the film. The characters also often adapt to the games they are in in graphical style which was a great idea, and the music also fits in with the 8-bit style. Everything in the film seems to gel together so well.

The opening ten-minutes, which establishes the games, the universe and the alcoholic-anonymous-esque bad-guys meeting, is some of the best animation and humour you’ll see in ages. Where the opening to ‘Up’ was the best first ten minutes of a CGI film ever for pulling at your heart-strings, this is the same but with jokes.

The film is perhaps at its strongest at the start and never quite recaptures that opening magic but the interaction between the characters all the way through is excellent. The film only really dips when the character of Venelope Von Schweet appears, voiced by and clearly modelled on Sarah Silverman. She’s meant to be intentionally annoying and she succeeds. I don’t like Silverman as a comedian and this transfers into the film, and her lines in the script are often at odds with the more intelligent and fun humour scattered through the rest of the film. A good toilet joke is fun in a film but her elements of the script do this too often and is the only negative I can find in the film, especially when there’s an awkward one-minute segment of her taking the mickey out of the title ‘Heroes Duty’ in American (“Dooty”) as slang for poo, something that doesn’t particularly translate well over to this country.

However, her character does redeem herself and by the end transforms into a more pleasant character.

‘Wreck It Ralph’ is a must-see film especially if you have a love for classic video games. The amount of cameos makes it a must-see-again film and the interaction between the characters is perfect in their styles. Plus, a film that makes jokes out of poor AI in games,  programming glitches, the clichĂ©s of both retro and modern titles, and captures the style of so many different conventions so perfectly, is well worth viewing.

The strongest CGI film since ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs’, ‘Wreck It Ralph’ is my favourite film in a long time full of the little touches that make a film really good and worth watching again. It does perhaps take a dip mid-way through and shouldn’t have cheapened itself with some of the toilet-humour, but it was a delight to watch and there was a permanent smile etched on my face throughout the running time.

Plus, the preceding short ‘Paperman’ was a thing of wonder too.

Wreck It Ralph: 9/10

Frankie and Benny’s are bugging my conversations!

Posted on 01:56 by Unknown

I have a shocking conspiracy theory to reveal to you all today. Now I fear revealing this on the internet as I may no longer be here within the next few hours, smuggled away by angry Italian-Americans in sharp, pin-stripe suits and trilbys, who will tie me to a chair, interrogate me and force me to eat platters. Because the truth is I know that the restaurant chain Frankie and Benny’s have been bugging me.

They are clearly tapping into my conversations. Whilst I’m sharing innocent words with my friends and colleagues, a chap called Mario is sat nearby in a van with a satellite dish on top of it, listening into my words and taking evidence.

How do I know this? Well it’s the only explanation I have for what I call the Frankie and Benny’s birthday effect.

I have never been into a Frankie and Benny’s – and when I say never, I mean never - without half-way through a meal experiencing the familiar conventions of the lights dimming, the background music changing and the dulcet tones of ‘Happy Birthday For You’ breaking out over the speaker system.

Now you may not think this is particularly weird; surely somewhere like Frankie and Benny’s is just the perfect place for people of all ages to celebrate the anniversary of their birth and so it is likely always to happen, and it’s just coincident it’s happened every time and not evidence of a weird conspiracy theory.

But I disagree. And how do I know? Because of last night.

Having enjoyed the film ‘Wreck It Ralph’ with two friends we decided to go for something to eat in the eighty-minute gap we had before the next film. We chose to eat at Frankie and Benny’s across the Leisure Exchange in Bradford but we realised that they, alongside Pizza Hut and Nandos, were pretty busy. We joked as we crossed the forecourt about my birthday party theory before entering the establishment and telling the gentleman on the door about our request for a table for three. He said it would be a twenty minute wait, something we could not afford with the next film showing looming over us. As I finished my anecdote about birthdays and realised we should try somewhere else less busy, having literally been only in the building for fifteen seconds of a one-minute visit, the lights dimmed and the familiar strains of ‘Happy Birthday To You’ played out.

Once more I had failed to enter the establishment without hearing the tune.

And if that’s not proof that the restaurant chain is bugging my conversations and waiting for me to enter their establishment I don’t know what is.

Frankie and Benny’s, I am onto you. The police have been informed! :-p
