There’s a sentence I never thought I’d end up writing as I’m not really a fan of the singer – his music is middle-of-the-road RnB to me, neither completely unlistenable but not the most amazing songs I’ve heard – and I’m not so worried that it keeps me up at night, but there have been a series of rather worrying news stories coming out about him recently.
In the past we’ve had the issues revolving around social networking and things like ‘Cut For Bieber’ which have sparked controversy and led to worried parents and even more worried fans. Bieber has lots of young fans, all very impressionable, who seem to hang on his every word and action. This is, of course, nothing new as we had young fans phoning up the Samaritans after ‘Take That’ split, but with the internet now more prevalent than when Gary and Robbie were young, it can reach fever pitch levels.
Aside from this the fame seems to be getting to the young singer. He’s only nineteen yet we’re seeing articles like this (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21715992) saying how he’s had to cut gigs short due to suffering from breathing problems on stage. Now I know being part of a gig, especially as energetic as his style of performance, isn’t a sit down and sing style of event, but still he’s young and fully of energy: is he being pushed too hard?
There’s a list as long as my arm of young stars – singers, actors etc – who have risen to his levels of fame and the pressure must be immense, but people need to learn from people like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, all big stars who have gone off the rails and ultimately died in the quest of show business either down to their hectic work schedule or unresolved personal issues.
It’s time someone took a long hard look at the world revolving around Bieber, at the young fans in the maelstrom of fan adulation who are doing themselves no favours and him, and to the health of Bieber who, with gigs starting late and problems when he finally gets on stage and the sandstorm of negative publicity that whips up when this happens, is needing some help.
With sixty-three dates through to August that’s a punishing schedule even for someone so young and with clashes with photographers and Instragrammed photos of him lying in hospital beds, it’s clear not all is right in the world of Justin Bieber and it’s time something is done before he becomes another adulated young talent who goes off the rails and ends up doing themselves in in the name of fan service.
