Hurts- All I Want For Christmas Is New Year's Day
As much as I love Hurts – the first song I heard by them ‘Stay’ is a beautiful track – they could make a song about winning the lottery sound like the most depressing tune ever. I know Christmas can be a time of arguments and stress but overall it is a fun time, but here is a tune that sums up Christmas as a time when you might just want to sob into your festive sherry.
It certainly has all the hallmarks of a festive song with bells and a choir-feel but it makes Chris Rea sound happy when he’s driving home for Christmas.
Sombreness aside, it’s actually a nice track to listen to with a warming feel to it despite its lyrics and they’ve certainly nailed the winter feel to the music. It’s not the happiest song of this festive period but it’s a pleasing listen. Never have I been so conflicted between not wanting to like a song because it’s so sombre, but also enjoying the experience of hearing it.

Mick Hucknall- Happy This Christmas
The once lead singer of Simply Red is back with this Xmas offering. Less festive sounding than the Hurts song – though it does through in the bells as well - but far more in the spirit of things, it’s hardly the most revolutionary Christmas song ever with the lyrics echoing every other seasonal tune since the dawn of time (or at least the wax disc).
It’s not the most exciting track but will fit in nicely on a compilation CD of Christmas tunes. It’s a song that doesn’t outstay its welcome and slots nicely into a playlist.

Moby ft Inyang Bassey- The Right Thing
Moving away from all things Santa we come to this, the latest release from electronic master Moby. The third cut from his new album, Moby has left behind doing his own vocals from the ‘Hotel’ period (my favourite of his) and leaves Inyang Bassey to do the work. A track with a very simple repetitive keyboard riff with Bassey’s somnambulant vocals over the top it’s a song that very much washes over you. It’s not particularly amazing in the pantheon of his discography but it’s a smooth, enjoyable track that sets a laid –back mood, the sort of mood Moby is famous for creating. One for the album I think if you can pick that up.

The Wombles- Wombling Merry Christmas
Receiving yet another release – surely challenging Slade for the most re-entries into the chart – it’s no wonder this has been mashed-up with Wizzard’s famous song as it has echoes of that. A harmless track that takes the cartoon puppets – who really are not that famous anymore – polishes them up with a new video with modern references to Jedward among others and re-packages it. The song itself is no different and actually isn’t really that good a Christmas song. In fact, compared to its contemparies is a bit tedious and pondering and no amount of sleigh bells can help it.
If you haven’t already got this in your music collection from numerous compilations then you’re not missing out, but I’m sure it’ll be lying about somewhere in your parent’s collection to dust off and bring back out.
